Our journey was long but we arrived safely in Auckland and in great spirits on a breezy, sunny Saturday afternoon. Due to a few delays and an unexpected fuel stop in St.Louis, the connections were a little rushed, but this intrepid group of travelers remains unfazed. After meeting our guide Jill, tour manager Adele, and driver Stu, they took us through the city to One Tree Hill (Maungakiekie), the site of an important Maori fortification (pa). We climbed the 182 m volcanic cone and enjoyed 360-degree views of Auckland and it’s two harbors and many islands. The water was a gorgeous blue and the sun glinted off of the water.  Next we got settled in at our hostel near to the city center and enjoyed a delicious dinner prepared for us by Jill and Adele, complete with birthday cake for Emmy. (Happy Birthday Emmy!). Most took an after-dinner walk down Queen Street to the Sky Tower where the city was celebrating Chinese New Year - Year of the Pig, Go Hoggers!  We are so grateful to be here and excited for what awaits us here in this beautiful country. Kia Ora!
