The NMH Chamber Orchestra left campus at midnight on Saturday, and twelve hours later, we stepped off the plane in bright, humid Belize City. We received a warm welcome from our guide Albert, enjoyed a light lunch, and despite some heavy afternoon rainfall, we embarked on a driving tour of the city. Along the way, we learned about British trade, Belizean independence, and this region's vulnerability to seasonal tropical storms and hurricanes, particularly because the city is located below sea level. This evening, we reflected on our experiences over a hearty meal at our hotel (pictured below).  We also met Colville Young, the director of of the National Youth Orchestra here, who will facilitate much of our musical exchange while we are in Belize. The group is tired after a long day of traveling, and we are headed to bed early in preparation for a full day of music and travel tomorrow.

Stay tuned for notes from our student travelers! The orchestra members in Belize are Cate Byrne, Hannah Callaghan, Lauren Emineth, Dain Kim, Leila Mirzai, Dorian Pousont, Noah Scott, and Tianyun Shi, with trip leaders Steve Bathory-Peeler and Eleanor Conover.
